On September 5th, 2024, the ‘Climate x’ Leadership Training Program 2024, hosted by the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC), successfully held the second live lecture focusing on global climate governance.
Prof. Yukari Takamura, a distinguished Professor at the Institute for Future Initiatives of the University of Tokyo, specializing in international law and environmental law with focuses on legal and governance issues relating to multilateral environmental agreements as well as climate and energy laws and policies, delivered the lecture.
The lecture gave participants a comprehensive understanding of global climate governance's current status and challenges. It covered not only international climate treaties such as the Paris Agreement but also explored the dynamic developments in norms and institutions relevant to businesses and financial institutions, with a particular focus on corporate sustainability reporting. This session was crucial for future climate leaders to understand the complex interplay between global policies and business practices in addressing climate change.
During the lecture, students were inspired by the critical role of both state and non-state actors in enhancing global climate governance. The adage “Actions speak louder than words” rings true as companies like Microsoft and Apple lead the charge towards net zero emissions, demonstrating corporate commitments by reducing their direct emissions end by driving sustainability across their supply chains and the wider industry.
The 2024 Climate x Leadership Training Program, strategically supported by UNESCO and GAUC's global partners, aimed to empower youth with the knowledge, skills, and tools to become the climate leaders of tomorrow. The program inspired participants to envision a sustainable future, take meaningful action, and unlock their potential as leaders for a carbon-neutral future.
The next session of the 2024 Climate x Leadership Training Program is scheduled for September 10th, Prof. Ryuji Matsuhashi of the University of Tokyo and Prof. Shoibal Chakravarty of the Indian Institute of Science will bring their interdisciplinary insights regarding Climate x Energy.
